The 3rd IAP MD Annual Scientific Meeting 2016 was held at G hotel, Gurney drive, Penang on the 8th and 9th October 2016. This year the conference was entitled ‘Gastrointestinal Diseases; Different Scopes, Common Goals’ with our target audience being both from the pathology faculty as well as from the Surgical and gastroenterology faculties. The conference was attended by about 250 delegates being medical officers, trainees, pathologists and clinicians both from Malaysia and overseas.
Our invited speakers were from both a histopathological and clinical background. Our key speaker Clinical Professor Dr M Priyanthi Kumarasinghe from The University of Western Australia captivated the participants with her interesting lectures and high energy. The other speakers from both MOH and MOE delivered valuable information for daily practise of gastrointestinal pathology and further clarified the need for constant co-operation between pathologists and clinicians. A trade exhibition was also held concurrently with 11 companies participating. The exhibition allowed participants to explore new avenues in pathology. The poster presentation was well received by participants with a total of 31 posters both from the anatomic pathology faculty as well as the clinical faculties. On the 7th October 2016, a pre-congress workshop was held at Hospital Pulau Pinang entitled ‘Gynaecological Cytopathology for Practicing Personnel’ which was attended by over a 183 participants. These participants included pathologist, Scientific Officers and medical laboratory technologists. The full day course was well –received with positive feedback being the largest cytology course to be held in Malaysia to date. Overall, the 3rd IAP MD Annual Scientific Meeting 2016 was a great success and the organising committee was able to achieve their goal of both the clinicians and pathologist coming together to nurture the common understanding of GI pathology.
