In collaboration with the International Academy of Pathology Malaysian Division (IAPMD), the Department of Pathology, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Health Campus Kelantan, organised an inaugural Breast and Thyroid Pathology Update virtually on 16th and 17th June 2021. This 2-day course was attended by 250 delegates, comprised mainly of Pathologists, Medical Officers and Trainees.
Our invited speakers were All 3 renowned breast and endocrine pathologists in Malaysia, Dr Mohamad Rafie Mad Kaslan (Hospital Putrajaya), Dr Moharzudi Mohamad (Hospital Queen Elizabeth, Kota Kinabalu Sabah) and Associate Professor Dr Wan Faiziah Wan Abdul Rahman (Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia) and special invitation, our dedicated breast and endocrine surgeon from Universiti Sains Malaysia, Dr Maya Mazuwin Yahya. All speakers have vast experience handling Malaysian referral cases of breast and thyroid diseases.
The theme of this seminar was ‘Common is not always simple!’. This theme was inspired because breast and thyroid cases are common cases that keep increasing nowadays. Despite their commonality, their challenging morphology always puts pathologists in a diagnostic dilemma. The course is slanted towards practical diagnostic histopathology, clinical correlation and comprehensive coverage of histopathology of breast and thyroid diseases with special emphasis on areas which pose diagnostic difficulties.
On the first day of the course, participants were enlightened with a breast update, followed by a thyroid update on the second day. Apart from updates, plenty of exciting and challenging cases were discussed during the slide seminar. Overall, this seminar was successful, comprising a good discussion between pathologists and highlighting important diagnostic points.
I would like to thank all who attended the Breast and Thyroid Pathology Update 2021 and all committee members who made this seminar a real success. Look forward to having 2nd Breast & Thyroid /Endocrine pathology updates in the near future, probably 2025. Stay tuned!
